LETTER

FROM THE

SUSTAINING DIRECTOR

"YOU DON'T HAVE TO LOOK FAR TO FIND A CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION IN OUR COMMUNITY BEING SERVED OR LED BY A JUNIOR LEAGUE OF SPOKANE SUSTAINER."

- GAIL STEVENSON

Looking back over 119 years of Junior League history, you don’t have to dig deep to find some very impressive women: Eleanor Roosevelt, Sandra Day O’Connor, Barbara Bush, Betty Ford and more. However as noted in Volunteer Powerhouse, a history of the Junior League,  “The strength of the organization has been the untold thousands of women whose names are known only in their own communities and regions”… communities and regions just like Spokane.

This struck a chord with me recently. I had an opportunity to sit with three local trailblazers—all sustaining members of the Junior League of Spokane. As I listened while they reminisced about time spent volunteering in Spokane, it occurred to me: The impact these three impressive sustainers have made and continue to make in our community is mind-boggling. Just imagine what a story the combined volunteer history of all of our sustainers would tell?

Sustaining members are a critical ingredient to the success of our organization. They serve as a valuable resource to the League as mentors, advisors, and inspirational role models. Our sustainers start as active members in the JLS or other Leagues across the country, and many go on to complete our mission of providing trained volunteers to the community. You don’t have to look far to find a charitable organization in our community being served or lead by JLS sustainers.

We are proud of our 100 sustaining members who give their time, financial support and leadership skills to improve both our League and the community in which we live. They are a valued part of the JLS for their leadership, financial support and connections within our community.

The advantages of membership in the Junior League of Spokane are numerous. They include, but not least of all, the life-long connections with women who share a devotion to improving and serving the community. We welcome all eligible former or current members of the JLS as well as transfers from other Leagues to apply for sustainer status. If you are interested in becoming a sustaining member of the JLS, please email membershipdirector@jlspokane.org for more information.
